Farmshop & Butchery for organic farm-to-fork producers
David Camp and his wife Helen have had Daynes Farm in South Devon since 2011. Both David and Helen’s family have been in the farming sectors for generations as far back as they can trace. Their aim was always one day to celebrate local produce with a complete farm-to fork experience, proudly rearing their own organic Boer goats, Tamworth pigs, South Devon heifers and white Face lambs.
Having undertaken a recent course in butchery, David and Helen will now make their own range of Daynes Farm sausages, burgers, pies and pasties. They will also process their own meat, reared on the farm, in their state-of-the-art Fisher UK Butchery and Processing area.
They approached Fisher UK in the first place as they had heard about us in a national grazing producer group, Precision Grazing – a UK-wide forum for like-minded grass-based regenerative farmers.
Helen is delighted with the installation and said :
“From the moment we contacted Fisher, they were able to draw-up an initial design for us as regards to what we wanted, this was then fine-tuned over the course of the discovery phase. It is really important to us that we have a facility that has all of the production space and equipment needed for what we’re sure will be a very busy farmshop and a destination where the general public can learn more about farming, sustainability, seasonality and conservation.”
David and Helen have benefitted from being awarded a ‘Farming an a protected landscape’ grant of 40% of the value of the Fisher installation, as the farm is situated on the boarder of an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB).
The grant is a three-year programme, funded by DEFRA to support farmers in protecting the landscape, while promoting sustainable farming.
Dianne Lethbridge, Communications Officer at South Devon AONB said
“It’s fantastic to be able to support our local farmers with vital funding to help them grow their businesses, while protecting our beautiful South Devon landscape, nature and its lush flora and fauna. LEAF Open Farm Sunday is such a fantastic way to promote our work and encourage thoughts and conversations around where food comes from and the processes that go into producing the finest quality, high welfare British food.”
Fisher UK’s Technical Director, Jon Fisher, was able to tweak the design to make the perfect facility for the Camps, which will enable them to sell from the farm gate with an integrated, purpose-built 10mtr x 6mtr modular Farm shop, complete with up and over butcher’s counter, chiller and working kitchen area.
Jon said :
“The larch clad Farm shop & Butchery is designed to be a ‘plug and play’ solution for anyone wanting to sell from the farm gate. We were conscious that its prominent hilltop location meant that it had to blend in with the surrounding area of outstanding natural beauty.
Anthracite grey doors and windows, coupled with bi-fold doors complete the aesthetically pleasing finish and we were delighted to hear that Helen and David have received a great deal of positive feedback from the local community on the design.”
The Camps benefited greatly from Jon’s in-depth technical knowledge and expertise in ensuring the facility met the specification & regulations for an cutting, processing and retail unit.
Daynes farm shop is set to open in time for Open Farm Sunday on June 12th 2022. This is a national event where British farmers are encouraged and supported by LEAF (linking Environment and Farming). The event encourages the general public to visit farms to learn and experience life on a working farm and better understand where food comes from and measured taken to safeguard nature and the environment.
Minimising food miles is extremely important to Helen and David, with most livestock reared on the farm and any bought in sourced within a ten-mile radius. They also send animals off to Lang’s slaughterhouse, just a stone’s throw away from the farm – as this is such a short journey, the animals are less stressed, and their meat eats perfectly.
It is an exciting time for the Camps as they enter the next phase of business development by creating a true Farm Shop in every sense of the word, with produce reared, grown and sold on the farm.
A Fisher UK Farm shop & Butchery is a turnkey solution, built off-site for minimal disruption to working farms. This solution can help any landowner sell from the farm gate and profit and benefit from processing their own meat, in their own on-site facility.
