Shardale Wild British Game invite us into their Fisher UK Modular AGHE Facility

Shardale Wild British Game was founded by Adam Massheder, a gamekeeper for over 20 years across Yorkshire. With a passion about Game & Conservation & based at the beautiful Place Newton estate in North Yorkshire, they are a truly ‘field to fork’ business, & pride themselves on the fact that they breed & raise their own birds themselves in their natural environment.

Following an increase in demand from both trade & retail sectors led Adam Massheder, Director at Shardale & the owner of Place Newton Estate, Michael Wood, to have the vision to install a state-of-the-art Fisher UK Approved Game Handling Establishment ( AGHE ), which would mean they could process & package all their own game birds.

The Design & Discovery Process

In 2018 Adam secured a grant to help him build a new FSA approved Game handling facility to ensure he could market the high-quality produce from his & other local estates.

Jon Fisher, Technical Director at Fisher UK, was able to consult with Adam & Michael, from initial concept to completion of the complex design process, ensuring all necessary FSA regulations & industry guidelines were complied with.

The main reason for Shardale opting for a Fisher UK facility was primarily the cost-effective design, but also the timescale from initial design to completion, which was far quicker than any other solution.

Jon Fisher says : “ We are proud to have been involved in this project, especially from the very outset of the concept. We brought the ideas of Adam & Michael together to create their new processing facility. In this case having a completely blank canvas to work from allowed us to ensure the internal layout not only suited the requirements of Shardale Game but also met FSA regulations, prior to inspection. “

The 12.0mtr x 10.2mtr AGHE is comprised of 3 individual modules, which came together on site to create a single facility. Each module was built off-site in a factory environment, which gave the client no disruption during the construction phase.

In Fisher UK’s factory, all the components to make up the facility are fitted in each module, such as walls and ceilings, doors, electrics, plumbing & refrigeration.

The modules are delivered to site on articulated lorries and the installation team from Fisher UK has the modules reconnected & weatherproofed within a 24-hour period.

Finished flooring, such as PU resin, is applied on site to complete the project.

Comparable to traditional methods of construction, Fisher UK’s solutions offer reduced timescales, lower on-site man hours & consequently reduces any potential health & safety risks.

The whole facility has created a layout for Shardale that allows an efficient flow of product & personnel – it is made up of an intake lobby, main chiller, pluck & evisceration room, processing & packing area, holding freezer & storage & dispatch chiller.

Personnel enter through a separate area with changing room, hygiene area & office.
